A porcelain veneer (dental veneer, dental porcelain laminate, tooth veneer) is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth. Normally, five or six implants are used to replace all the teeth in one jaw, as each implant can usually support two teeth. If a front tooth is chipped, damaged or discoloured, a thin layer (veneer) of ceramic material, eg porcelain, can be made to fit over it, or tooth-coloured posite material can be placed on the tooth. On the second visit, the dentist cements the veneer onto the front of the tooth. Your dentist will give you tubes of bleaching gel and detailed instructions. If you have tooth decay or gum disease, this should be treated before any cosmetic dentistry is started.
